Creating Routines to Combat Loneliness
At Ivy Living, we understand the importance of maintaining a sense of purpose, connection and joy for older adults. That’s why we’re committed to sharing strategies that can help caregivers develop consistent, engaging routines to combat loneliness and keep seniors active and socially involved.
Tips we recommend for external caregivers:
Establish a Structured Daily Routine
Consistency and predictability can be incredibly soothing for older adults. Work with the seniors in your care to develop a daily schedule that includes a mix of self-care activities, cognitive stimulation, physical exercise and social engagement. This could look like a morning exercise class, followed by a nutritious lunch, an arts and crafts session and an afternoon outing.
Incorporate Mood-Boosting Activities
It’s important to prioritize activities that are known to improve mood. This could include listening to uplifting music or engaging in creative hobbies. Encourage seniors to spend time outdoors when possible, even if it’s just for a brief walk around the neighborhood.
Facilitate Social Connections
Loneliness is a major risk factor for physical and mental decline in older adults. Seek out opportunities for your loved to interact with their peers, whether it’s through group outings, communal meals, game nights or discussion clubs. Consider utilizing technology to help them stay connected with distant loved ones as well.
Provide Cognitive Stimulation
Keeping the mind active is crucial for staving off boredom and isolation. Offer a variety of mentally engaging activities such as trivia, puzzles, brain teasers or classes on subjects that interest the seniors. Encourage them to learn new skills or revisit hobbies they enjoyed in the past.
Check In Regularly and Assess
Regularly check in with your loved one to assess their emotional well-being and identify any changes in mood or behavior. Be attuned to signs of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or depression and connect them with appropriate support and resources as needed.
By creating consistent, enriching routines and fostering a sense of community, external caregivers can help older adults not just survive, but thrive. Oakmont Senior Living is committed to supporting you in this important work and ensuring that every senior feels valued, engaged and supported all year round.
